Solar Panel Cleaning
Solar Panel Cleaning from Dirty South Power Wash, based in Horley: dirt, dust and bird droppings removed from the panels carefully, since that build-up is what cuts the light they absorb. The first step is a free, no-obligation quote.
Dirt, dust and bird droppings reduce how much light your solar panels absorb, and that means less output. Our professional solar panel cleaning keeps your panels performing at their best, cleaned carefully so the panels are not damaged. It pairs well with our roof, gutter and soft washing services.
What we clean
- Careful cleaning to maximise efficiency
- Removal of dirt, dust and bird droppings
- Pairs with roof, gutter and soft washing
- Domestic and commercial installations
How it works
- 1 Free quote and panel check
We look at the array, the pitch and how we can reach it from the ground or safely from height, and check the condition of the frames and seals before touching anything.
- 2 Pure water, no detergent
Panels get cleaned with purified water through a soft brush on a pole. Detergent leaves a film that attracts more dirt, and hard water dries to a spotted finish that shades the cells.
- 3 Work the whole face, including the bottom edge
Dirt and moss build up worst along the bottom rail, where a shaded strip can drag the whole string down. That edge gets the attention, not just the easy middle.
- 4 Rinse off and leave to dry clear
A final pure water rinse means the panels dry without spotting. We keep off the panel faces throughout, because standing on glass is how they get micro-cracked.

Solar Panel Cleaning: your questions answered
Does cleaning solar panels actually improve output?
Dirt, dust, bird droppings and moss block light from reaching the cells, so removing them lets the panels absorb what they were installed to absorb. How much difference it makes depends entirely on how dirty they were, so you will not be quoted a percentage figure here. The build-up along the bottom edge of a panel matters more than a light film across the middle, because a shaded strip drags down the whole string.
How often do solar panels need cleaning?
It depends on what lands on them instead of on a set interval. Panels under trees, near a busy road, on a farm or below a flight path pick up far more than a panel on an open roof away from all that. A useful habit is to look at the bottom edge of the array: once moss or a dark band is building up along the lower rail, it is worth doing.
Is it safe to clean solar panels?
Yes, when they are cleaned the right way, which means never standing on the glass. The work is done from the ground or from safe access with a soft brush on a pole, keeping off the panel faces entirely, because weight on a panel is how micro-cracks happen. It is also worth checking any cleaning guidance your installer or manufacturer gave you, since that is specific to your system.
Why use pure water instead of detergent?
Because detergent leaves a residue and residue attracts dirt, so a panel washed with detergent gets dirty again faster. Ordinary tap water is worse still: it dries and leaves mineral spotting across the glass, which is the last thing you want on a surface whose whole job is letting light through. Purified water lifts the dirt and dries clear.
Can you clean the panels, the roof and the gutters in one visit?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it since the access is set up once. The order matters: roof first, then panels, then gutters, because moss coming off the tiles lands on both the panels and in the gutters. The roof immediately around an array is often the mossiest part of the whole roof, as it stays shaded and gets less rain washing over it.
Do you cover my area for solar panel cleaning?
Surrey, Sussex and Kent are all covered, and for solar work the deciding factor is the roof rather than the distance. A ground-mounted array or a single-storey roof is straightforward almost anywhere. A steep two-storey array with awkward standing room needs looking at first. Send a photo of the array from the ground with your postcode and you will get a straight answer either way.
