Gutter Clearing: your questions answered
How do I know if my gutters need clearing?
The clearest sign is water spilling over the front edge during rain instead of running to the downpipe. Others are plants or grass visibly growing out of the gutter, a dirty streaked line down the wall below, damp patches on the wall under a joint, and moss debris on the ground after a windy day. If you can see green sprouting over the lip, it is well past due.
How often should gutters be cleared?
Once a year suits most properties, and twice is worth it under trees. What actually decides it is what is above the gutter: a house under a mature canopy fills every autumn without fail, while an open property with no overhanging cover can go considerably longer. Roof moss matters too, because moss washing down off the tiles ends up in the gutter regardless of trees.
What happens if you find a split gutter, a loose bracket or a leak?
You get told, and shown where it is. Clearing gutters means being right alongside them, so split joints, sagging brackets, gutters that have dropped out of fall and slipped tiles above all get noticed while the work is going on. Repairs are a different trade from clearing, so the finding gets reported instead of a clear-out being passed off as a fix.
Do you check the downpipes as well as the gutters?
Yes, because a clear gutter feeding a blocked downpipe still overflows. Water gets run through after clearing so the whole run can be watched, which is the only way to know it is working. Debris comes out instead of being flushed along to form the next blockage further down.
What happens to the debris you take out?
It comes out of the gutter and goes into bags rather than being tipped over a border or left in a heap on the drive. Gutter waste is mostly wet leaf litter, moss and grit, so it is bulky and it stains whatever it sits on. Most of it is garden waste and suits a green bin or a compost heap, so say which you would rather and the bags get left where you want them.
How far do you travel for gutter clearing?
Across Surrey, Sussex and Kent from a Horley base, though gutter work is worth thinking about differently to a big job. It is a shorter visit, so a long trip for gutters alone is not always sensible for either side. If you are toward the edge of the patch, it usually works better paired with something else at the property, or with a neighbour having theirs done at the same time.
