Driveway Cleaning for homes and businesses in Dorking
Dorking sits at the foot of the North Downs and plenty of properties here are on a slope, so driveway cleaning on a gradient is a normal part of the work here, not an exception. Cleaning a sloping drive is a different job from a flat one: gravity decides where the water goes, the silt all wants to end up in one place, and the surface has to stay safe to walk on when it is wet.
Washing a slope without flooding the bottom of it
On a sloping drive everything runs downhill, which usually means towards the garage door, the house threshold or a gully at the bottom. Washing the whole slope top to bottom in one go pushes a wall of dirty water and silt straight at whatever is at the low end.
The way round it is to work in bands and clear each one before moving on, so the silt is lifted rather than carried. Where the low point is a garage or a doorway, the flow wants diverting away from it first. It takes longer than working straight down the slope, and it is the difference between a clean drive and a silted threshold.
Grip matters more on a sloping drive
Algae on a level drive is unsightly. Algae on a sloping drive is slippery, and a wet slope with a green film on it is one of the easier ways to hurt yourself at home. That is the strongest practical reason to clean a sloping drive, well ahead of how it looks.
Worth knowing: the surface will be slippery while it is wet during and just after the clean, and grip improves as it dries. On a steep drive it is best kept clear until it has dried out properly.
How we work
- 1Free quote and surface check
Send photos or book a visit. We work out what the drive is made of, because block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete and tarmac all take a different approach. We also look for loose blocks, sunken sections, oil patches and anything that will not come out.
- 2Clear the drive and plan the run-off
Cars and bins off, loose debris swept up, and a look at where the dirty water is going to end up. It wants keeping away from planting and out of open drains as far as the layout allows, with anything vulnerable at the edges covered.
- 3Rotary pass across the open areas
A flat surface cleaner does the main run. It holds an even distance off the surface, so you get one consistent finish instead of the stripes you get from waving a lance about.
- 4Lance the edges and detail work
The rotary head cannot reach kerbs, gullies, drain surrounds or the tight run alongside a wall. That gets done by hand so the edges match the middle instead of framing the drive in green.
- 5Joints, rinse and tidy
Cleaning block paving pulls sand out of the joints, so we talk you through what the joints need afterwards and agree it before we start. Then a final rinse, with the silt swept up rather than washed into the nearest gully, and everything put back.
Not every surface suits high pressure. Where needed we use soft washing to protect the material while still getting a deep clean.

Driveway Cleaning in Dorking: your questions answered
Can you clean a steep sloping driveway in Dorking?
Slopes are common enough here that we plan for them as standard. The main differences are working in bands so the silt does not all run to the bottom, and setting up to keep the flow away from garage doors and thresholds at the low end. It typically takes a bit longer than the same area on the flat.
Will cleaning make my driveway less slippery?
Yes, that is one of the main benefits, especially on a slope. The slipperiness comes from the film of algae and organic growth on top of the paving, not from the paving itself, so removing it restores the grip the surface was built with. It will be slippery while wet during the clean, so it is best to keep off it until it has dried.
Where does all the dirty water go when you clean a driveway?
We manage it deliberately instead of letting it find its own way. On a sloping drive that means working in sections, lifting the silt as we go and diverting the flow away from doorways, garages and open drains where we can. Cleaning residue and grit should not simply be washed into a surface water drain, so we sweep up rather than flush down.
Do you clean driveways with steps or retaining walls?
They usually need doing at the same time to look right. Steps and retaining walls on a sloping site collect growth faster than the drive does because they hold moisture in the joints. Steps in particular need care: the tread is a grip surface, and worn stone nosings will not take heavy pressure without damage.
How long will a driveway clean last on a shaded, sloping drive?
Generally a bit less than on an open flat drive, because shade and running water are what algae needs. Most drives benefit from a clean every one to two years, and a permanently shaded slope tends to be at the shorter end of that. A treatment after cleaning can slow the regrowth, and we will talk that through if it is worth doing on yours.
