Driveway Cleaning for homes and businesses in Horley

Horley is where we are based, so driveways here are the ones we see most. Most of them are block paving or concrete, and most of them have the same story: the car sits on the same two strips of the drive for years, the rest goes green, and one spring you notice the whole thing has gone two shades darker without ever looking dirty on any single day. Being in the town means we can work around when the drive is actually free, which matters more than people expect on a job that needs the car off it for a few hours.

Why Horley block paving goes green in the same places

Algae needs moisture and low light. On a typical Horley drive that means the shaded strip along the fence, the run beside the house wall, and anywhere a downpipe discharges onto the paving. Those areas stay damp for days after the open middle of the drive has dried, so they green over first and they green over again first after a clean.

It is worth knowing that before you book, because it changes what a good result looks like. The whole drive comes up clean, but the shaded strip will start to turn again sooner than the open areas. That is the surface doing what surfaces do, not the clean failing.

What happens to the joints

Cleaning block paving properly takes the jointing sand out with the dirt. There is no way round it: the muck sits in the top of the joint, so lifting the muck lifts the sand. Left open, those joints let weeds seed and let the blocks move under the car.

What your joints look like, and what they will need once the drive is clean, gets set out at quote stage, so it is agreed before anyone starts rather than being a surprise at the end.

How we work

  1. 1
    Free quote and surface check

Send photos or book a visit. We work out what the drive is made of, because block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete and tarmac all take a different approach. We also look for loose blocks, sunken sections, oil patches and anything that will not come out.

  2. 2
Clear the drive and plan the run-off

Cars and bins off, loose debris swept up, and a look at where the dirty water is going to end up. It wants keeping away from planting and out of open drains as far as the layout allows, with anything vulnerable at the edges covered.

  3. 3
Rotary pass across the open areas

A flat surface cleaner does the main run. It holds an even distance off the surface, so you get one consistent finish instead of the stripes you get from waving a lance about.

  4. 4
Lance the edges and detail work

The rotary head cannot reach kerbs, gullies, drain surrounds or the tight run alongside a wall. That gets done by hand so the edges match the middle instead of framing the drive in green.

  5. 5
    Joints, rinse and tidy

Cleaning block paving pulls sand out of the joints, so we talk you through what the joints need afterwards and agree it before we start. Then a final rinse, with the silt swept up rather than washed into the nearest gully, and everything put back.

Not every surface suits high pressure. Where needed we use soft washing to protect the material while still getting a deep clean.

Driveway Cleaning in Horley: your questions answered

How long does a driveway clean take in Horley?

Most domestic driveways are a single visit, and how long that visit runs depends on size and how much growth is on there. A small block-paved drive with light algae is quick. A large drive with thick moss in every joint, oil patches and a lot of edge detailing takes considerably longer, because the rotary head only handles the open areas and the rest is done by hand.

Do I need to move my car off the driveway?

Yes, the drive needs to be completely clear before we start. Cars, bins, pots and anything else on the surface all need to be off it, and it is best if they stay off until the surface has dried. If parking is tight, tell us when you book and we will fit the visit around when the drive is realistically free.

Will pressure washing damage my block paving?

Not when the pressure is matched to the block. Concrete block pavers are hard-wearing and take a rotary clean well. The damage you see on badly cleaned drives comes from holding a narrow lance too close, which cuts lines into the block face and blows the joints out. We keep an even distance with a flat surface cleaner across the open areas and only lance where the machine cannot reach.

Can you get old oil stains out of a driveway?

Sometimes, and which of the two yours is can be established before we start. Fresh oil that has sat on the surface usually responds to a degreaser. Oil that has soaked deep into porous concrete or into the body of a block over several years often lightens but does not disappear. Better to set that expectation up front than have you paying for a result nobody can deliver.
