Soft Washing for homes and businesses in Leatherhead
Bonded and resin-bound surfaces are one of the few hard landscaping surfaces where soft washing genuinely beats pressure washing, so if you have one on a Leatherhead path, drive or patio it is worth knowing that before booking. The aggregate is held together by a resin film, and that resin is the thing keeping the surface intact.
Resin holds the stone on, so protect the resin
Repairing it means matching aggregate and resin, and it always shows. On a resin-bound surface every stone is glued to its neighbours by a thin resin coat. Cut through it with a close, high-pressure jet and the stones come loose, leaving a bald patch.
Soft washing removes algae without touching the resin. The growth sits on the surface rather than in it, because a properly laid resin surface is not porous in the way stone is, so a treatment and a gentle rinse is all it takes.
A resin path or a bonded gravel walkway with a green film on it is deceptively slippery when wet, more so than block paving, because the surface texture is fine and once algae fills it there is very little grip left.
On a route people use to get to the front door, that matters. Cleaning it back restores the texture, and doing it before the wet months is more useful than doing it in spring.
How we work
- 1Identify the growth and the substrate
Green algae, black lichen, red algae and mould all respond differently, and render, K-rend, painted masonry, timber, cladding and PVC all take the treatment differently. Both halves have to be right before anything is mixed.
- 2Test patch somewhere out of the way
On painted and rendered surfaces especially, a small area should be tried first to see how it reacts. It costs ten minutes and it is the difference between a clean elevation and a patchy one.
- 3Pre-wet the planting and cover what needs covering
Beds and borders want watering before anything is mixed so nothing takes the solution neat, and anything nearby that should not get wet wants covering. This is most of the actual work on a soft wash.
- 4Apply at low pressure and let it dwell
The solution does the cleaning, not the machine. It goes on gently, then it needs time on the surface. Rushing the dwell is the usual reason a soft wash looks streaky.
- 5Rinse or leave to weather, then check back over
Some surfaces get rinsed down, some are better left for the rain to finish, and it depends on the product and the material. We tell you which one applies to yours and what it will look like in a fortnight.
A soft wash keeps clearing after we leave. The colour lifts on the day and the rest weathers off over the following days and weeks, so it is worth not judging it the same afternoon.

Soft Washing in Leatherhead: your questions answered
Can a resin-bound driveway or path be cleaned safely?
Yes, with low pressure or a soft wash. Every stone in a resin-bound surface is held to its neighbours by a thin resin film, and a close high-pressure jet cuts through it and leaves a bald patch where the aggregate has come away. Repairs never match. Algae on resin sits on the surface, so a treatment and a gentle rinse deals with it.
Is soft washing better than pressure washing for resin surfaces?
Yes, on these surfaces it is clearly better. The dirt and algae sit on top instead of soaking in, because a resin-bound surface is not porous the way stone is, so there is nothing to be gained from force and a great deal to lose. Soft washing gets the same result with no risk to the resin binding the aggregate together.
My resin path gets slippery in winter. Will cleaning help?
Yes, noticeably. Resin and bonded gravel surfaces have a fine texture, and once a film of algae fills it there is very little grip left, which makes them deceptively slippery when wet. Cleaning the film off restores the original texture. Doing it before the wet months rather than after is when you get the benefit.
Can you clean bonded gravel and other modern surfaces?
Yes, and the first step is always establishing what the surface actually is. Resin-bound, resin-bonded, rubber safety surfacing, porcelain and permeable systems all need different handling, and the common mistake is treating them like concrete. Tell us what you have when you enquire, or send a close-up photo and we will identify it.
How often should a resin surface be cleaned?
Usually once a year or so, more often if it is shaded or under trees. Because the growth sits on the surface instead of soaking in, regular light cleaning is easy and effective, and letting it build up gains you nothing. Keeping leaves and debris swept off between cleans makes a bigger difference than the interval does.
